What a way to finish the school term! Palmwoods State School students and teachers went out in a $50,000 blaze of glory and clouds of colour as the school celebrated its first ever colour run on the last day of school.

The children had been busy raising money for most of the term for the event.

They received money from 11 different countries and every state and territory in Australia, and were excited that they had already reached over $48,000 from 14,000-plus donations.

The final figure surpassed $50,000.

“Thanks to the generous spirit of the school community, this fundraiser has reached the outrageous total of $50,000,” said Colour Run Captain Kirsty Griffiths who is also a staff member and parent.

“This is an amazing effort and speaks volumes for our incredible school and the community.

“Thank you so much to the staff, for your enthusiasm in getting behind this event.

“It takes a special group of people to be willing to wear wedding dresses, get hosed and then colour-bombed — and the staff at Palmwoods State School are an exceptional bunch.

“Thankyou to our very generous local businesses who sponsored the teachers in their dresses.”

The local Rural Fire Brigade wet students and teachers down before they were doused in colour by fellow students while running an obstacle course to their favourite songs.

Teachers received a donation to their charity of $200 from local businesses in return for wearing wedding dresses for the hilarious event.

Community Liaison Officer Alison Donaldson said funds would help improve facilities in the school.

“We truly appreciate the support from our local businesses, our families and our staff,” she said. “The Colour Run funds will pay for water bubblers near the oval and lighting and sound systems for our hall.  Like most P&Cs, Covid has affected our usual fundraising events and we are so pleased that it won’t impact this one.”

Principal Peter Wilson was the last to brave the course. He was joined by the top 25 student fundraisers.

“There was a lot of work done by Mrs Griffiths to organise today’s event — not just today but for the past four or five weeks,” he said. “Thanks to the Palmwoods business and parent community, teachers, volunteers and students.”
